It’s an old trope, change is hard, change is hell. As humans living in the modern western world, those of us who are lucky enough to have our basic needs met take many things for granted, air, sun, food, clean water, a bed to sleep in and a roof over our heads. Any time what we deem as “regular” is disrupted our sense of balance, the entirety of our limbic systems are plunged into a a whirlpool of turmoil, the calculus of our world view called into question. But the fascinating thing about humans is that, we have a mechanism within us that even change, constant change can be adapted to, transforming into a non-event, less disruptive in its predictive unpredictability. May, a change agent month in an emotional Nine year, challenges the presumed patterns of turmoil. May’s motifs provide us with an expected shift in energies paired with more meaningful trajectories.

It’s not just disruption for disruption’s sake.

“Lose something every day. Accept the fluster / of lost door keys, the hour badly spent. / The art of losing isn’t hard to master” – Elizabeth Bishop, One Art

May’s transmutation lead by progress, propelled by a leveling up rather than a smashing up. May’s metamorphoses can lead to freedom.

Lest I paint too rosy a picture, this still can be a mix of light and dark energies. Some things are lost in the rumble-tumble of change are never found. The new landscape can also be starkly alien as we teach ourselves how to traverse it. But May, more than any time in the last 6 months, does give us some hope for the future, a glimpse of what can be the new terrain for the days and months ahead.

“It matters not at all whether we are holding our breath for a triumph or bracing for a tragedy. For as long as we are waiting, we are not living. If we are not careful enough with the momentum of our own minds, we can live out our days in this expectant near-life existence.” – Maria Popova
